Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The viral video captures the collapse of a wall at Shree Narayan Vidyalaya School in Vadodara, Gujarat.

What is the claim?

A 1:23-minute video showing a wall collapsing in a room full of students has circulated online with the claim that the incident occurred in Andhra Pradesh. The video depicts a classroom where, amid the commotion, a wall suddenly collapses, causing students to scatter in panic.

A post (archived here) on X (formerly Twitter) shared the video with the caption, “A school collapsed. Was it what you made under Nadu-Nedu, Jagan Reddy?” Nadu-Nedu, meaning "Then-Now," is a scheme implemented by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government in Andhra Pradesh under Jagan Mohan Reddy, aimed at improving government school infrastructure. This post had nearly 210,000 views at the time of writing. Archived versions of additional posts can be accessed here and here.

Another post (archive here) on X claimed, “Because of their hatred towards Jagan, the present government, rather than providing education in modern buildings constructed by him, taught classes in a dilapidated building and resulted in the loss of student lives.”

Both posts implied that the collapsed structure was a government school. The state government is currently run by the alliance of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the YSRCP in opposition.

However, the video is not from Andhra Pradesh, and there were no casualties in the incident.

What did we find?

We searched for recent news reports on the collapse of a government school in Andhra Pradesh but found no such reports.

When we performed a reverse image search on the video's keyframes, we discovered multiple news reports confirming that the incident took place in Gujarat, not Andhra Pradesh.

According to Divya Bhaskar, a Gujarati daily, the incident occurred on July 19, 2024, at Shri Narayan Vidhyalay near Gurukul Char Rasta, Waghodi Road, Vadodara, Gujarat. The report stated that a Class 7 student sustained a head injury and required stitches. Similarly, a Times of India report, dated July 21, 2024, identified the injured student as Dhairya Sutar, who received three stitches and is now stable.

ETV Bharat Gujarat confirmed these details, reporting that the school's first-floor wall collapsed, injuring one student and burying three bicycles under the debris. India Today also covered the incident with similar details.

The Indian Express reported that the District Education Officer in Vadodara has issued a show-cause notice to the school authorities, and parents of some students have filed complaints, which are currently under police investigation.

The verdict

The video showing the collapse of a wall in a private school is falsely attributed to a government school in Andhra Pradesh. The incident actually occurred in Gujarat.
