Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The viral image was captured during Rahul Gandhi's visit to a 'sharbat' shop in Delhi's Chandni Chowk area on April 18.

Context

As Karnataka gears up for the upcoming assembly election, the dispute between Amul and Nandini has stirred controversy in the state. Opposition leaders and pro-Kannada groups have attacked the government for allowing Amul to sell fresh milk and curd in Bengaluru. According to reports, there are fears that Amul's entry could spell trouble for the local favorite, Nandini. The controversy, ongoing since December 2022, has seen opposition leaders alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to merge the Karnataka Milk Federation brand with Amul, a charge rubbished by the ruling party.

Amid this, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on April 16 shared his support for Nandini and posted a photo on Twitter with the caption, "Karnataka's Pride - NANDINI is the best!" Soon after, social media users, including BJP leader Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, posted two photos and claimed that after promoting Nandini in Karnataka, Gandhi visited an Amul dairy outlet in Delhi. One photo shows Gandhi visiting a Nandini outlet, and the other shows him holding a watermelon at a shop with Amul boxes. It was claimed that the latter was captured at an Amul Dairy in Delhi. The post's caption read, "In Karnataka @RahulGandhi speaks against Amul, in Delhi goes to Amul dairy. People should understand that Congress loves nobody, all they want to do is - make Indians fight with each other."

However, this claim is false.

In Fact

A reverse image search revealed that the photo of Gandhi holding a watermelon was captured at a sharbat ir sherbet shop in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. The image was shared on April 18 from the official Twitter account of the Congress party with the caption, "Mohabbat Ki Sharbat.," which tranlates to sherbet of love. This photo shows that the shop has cartons of Amul milk in front.

A report by India Today said that Gandhi visited Chandni Chowk on April 18, where the former member of parliament was trying the area's offerings. He visited the "Mohabbat ka sharbat" stall tried their popular watermelon-based drink. The Times of India also reported on Gandhi's visit to the popular "Mohabbat Ka Sharbat" stall. The viral image was taken in front of this beverage stall, which had the Amul milk boxes in the background.

The Verdict

A photo of Rahul Gandhi at a shop in Delhi is being shared to falsely claim that the Congress leader visited an Amul dairy outlet despite expressing support for Nandini in Karnataka. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
