Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The claim Modi is the first PM to meet the British royal family is false. In 1969, Queen Elizabeth II hosted the then-prime minister Indira Gandhi.

What's the claim?

A video of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting a royal family is circulating on social media with a claim that the British royal family accorded a royal welcome to an Indian Prime Minister for the first time in history. It further states that they invited him for dinner and took photographs.

This claim is viral on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. An X user named Preeti Yadav shared the video with the caption, “This is the first time that the government of the United Kingdom has invited the prime minister of our country to sit with them for a banquet at their home. And he received respect for his good personality, as the royal family even posed for photos with him. It is a matter of pride not only for Prime Minister Modiji, but for the whole country (translated from Hindi)." This video has been viewed over 3,000 times. An archived of the post can be viewed here, here, here and here.

However, this video does not show Modi meeting the British royal family, it shows him meeting Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II in 2022. Additionally, Indira Gandhi was the first Indian Prime Minister to be hosted by the British royal family.

What we found?

Logically Facts observed the viral video and noticed the text ‘www.kongehuset.dk’ at the 45-second time code. We found that it is the official website of the Royal House of Denmark.

We then checked the the official social media accounts of the Royal House and found the now-viral video on the official Instagram account Danish Royal House, originally shared on May 4, 2022. The video's caption, when translated into English from Danish, states, “Tonight's official dinner on the occasion of His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Denmark took place at the Knights Hall in Christian VII's Palace in Amalienborg. Her Majesty The Queen hosted the dinner, where the Crown Prince couple also attended.”

This video was also uploaded on the YouTube channel of Indian news agency ANI on May 4, 2022, with a similar caption. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared pictures from the event on May 4, 2022, on his X account, with the caption, "Met Her Majesty, the Queen of the Kingdom of Denmark, Margrethe II in Copenhagen."

This shows that the royal family hosting Modi in the videos is not the British royal family, but the Danish royal family

Was Narendra Modi the first Indian prime minister to meet the royal family of UK and Denmark?

Logically Facts found that India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru met the Danish royal family in June 1957. Nehru met the Danish royal family at Fredensborg Castle, during his visit to Denmark.

The claim that Modi is the first Prime Minister to meet the UK royal family is also false. Queen Elizabeth II had hosted former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Buckingham Palace in 1969. Modi was invited to Buckingham Palace in the year 2015.

The verdict

The viral video does not show Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting the British royal family. It shows him meeting the Danish royal family in 2022. The claim that Modi is the first prime minister to meet the royal family of the United Kingdom is also false. Queen Elizabeth II hosted Indira Gandhi in 1969. Therefore, we have marked this viral claim as false.
