Fact-Check

The Verdict Fake

The White House press secretary did not leave the briefing room directly after she was asked about the apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Context

An altered video has surfaced on social media showing White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre leaving the briefing room directly after being asked about the recent apparent assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump.

However, the livestream of the press briefing shows that Jean-Pierre did not leave and, in fact, answered the questions addressed to her.

In the edited video, a correspondent asks Jean-Pierre questions about the apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump on September 15 at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Instead of responding to the question, the altered video shows Jean-Pierre leaving the briefing room in a hurry and saying, "Alright. Thanks, everybody. See you tomorrow."

One example of the edited video (archived here) was shared by an X user (formerly Twitter) on September 17 with the caption "GET'EM PETER!!!" It garnered more than 1.6 million views.

In fact

The clip is from a September 17 White House press briefing (archived here).

During the press briefing, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked Jean-Pierre about the incident, saying (timestamp 42:55), "It's been only two days since somebody allegedly tried to kill Donald Trump again, and you're here at the podium in the White House briefing room calling him a threat. How many more assassination attempts on Donald Trump until the president and the vice-president and you pick a different word to describe Trump other than threat?"

Contrary to the altered clip, Jean-Pierre answered the question and did not immediately leave.

She opened her response by saying (timestamp 43:19), "Peter, if anything from this administration, I completely disagree with the premise of your question, the question that you're asking. It is also incredibly dangerous in the way that you're asking it because American people are watching."

She goes on to say that President Joe Biden called Trump and added that Biden was "thankful, grateful that he was okay," finishing her response at 46:22.

The end of the edited clip, where Jean-Pierre thanks the journalists for attending, stems from the end of the press briefing at 51:19.

The verdict

A video of White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre evading being questioned about the recent apparent assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump is altered. The livestream of the briefing shows that Jean-Pierre responded to the question and did not immediately leave.
