Fact-Check

The Verdict Misleading

The video is outdated and is not related to the current elections.

Context

An online post (archived here) claimed the Amish community was showing support for Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential elections. To support this assertion, the author shared a video depicting Amish buggies adorned with Trump flags.

However, the video dates back to 2020 and is unrelated to the ongoing elections.

Closer look

A reverse image search led us to an article that had published the same footage in 2020. The piece suggested it may show some Amish supporters of Trump but could not confirm this. No reputable source reported similar rallies this year.

As the Associated Press reported, during this year's elections, Republicans sought to court Amish voters through billboards, adverts, door-to-door canvassing, and community meetings in Pennsylvania, a key swing state with the largest Amish population.

However, Steven Nolt, director of the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, confirmed to the Associated Press, "For most of Amish history and in most Amish communities today, Amish people don't vote. They haven't voted, they're not voting, and I think it’s safe to say in the near future, we wouldn't expect them to."

According to Amish America, less than 10 percent of Amish people of voting age participate in elections.

The verdict

The video cited in the post is misattributed; it was filmed in 2020 and is unrelated to the current presidential elections.

As such, the claim has been rated as misleading.
