Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The image was edited. In reality, Trump held up a jersey with “Trump 45” printed on the back.

Context

A manipulated 2019 post (archived here) has surfaced on Facebook. It shows former United States president and current Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump in what appears to be the White House's Oval Office holding up a football jersey that says, "No matter who is president, Jesus is still king."

The image is presented as if uploaded to Trump's Instagram @realdonaldtrump.

However, the image has been manipulated to add the statement about Jesus. In reality, the international football organization FIFA and the U.S. soccer federation gifted Trump a U.S. national soccer team jersey with his name and the number 45 during a visit to the White House.

In fact

Through a reverse image search, we found the original image of Trump holding up the white jersey. It was posted to his Instagram account on August 28, 2018. In contrast to the image on Facebook, the print on the back of the jersey says "Trump 45." Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States in 2016.

FIFA and U.S. soccer federation representatives visited the White House on August 28, 2018, to discuss the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Mexico and Canada. During the visit, Carlos Cordeiro, then-president of the U.S. soccer federation, presented Trump with the white U.S. team jersey with "Trump 45" on the back, as confirmed by pictures and video captured at the event.

Multiple fact-checking organizations debunked the image in 2019 when it first appeared while Trump was serving as president of the United States.

A similar manipulated image showed Trump holding up a jersey with "Bolsonaro" on the back, referring to former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

The verdict

The image showing Donald Trump holding a jersey with the text "No matter who is president Jesus is still king" has been manipulated. In reality, Trump was holding a jersey with "Trump 45" printed on the back. We have, therefore, marked this claim as false.
