UNICEF launched an emergency response program in the UK to ensure access to food to vulnerable children until Feb. 2021 amid the pandemic. The UN agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide has put forth a domestic emergency response program in the UK for the first time to tackle child food poverty. ‘Food Power for Generation Covid,’ a grant-funded program, was launched on Aug. 17, 2020, in partnership with the food and farming charity Sustain. The program is a joint initiative to provide food for children and families in the country who have been suffering due to the pandemic, and it will give grants to community food projects until Feb. 2021. It aims to control the rising number of people falling into poverty as UNICEF states that of the 2.4 million children across the UK, food-insecure households have been growing in the country; over 1/5th of households with children have gone hungry during the lockdown. The pandemic has hit family finances and access to emergency food sources under pressure from loss of donations. The Child Poverty Action Group's recent figures depict that a further one million children could fall into poverty by the end of the year due to the pandemic.
