Joe Biden called for a sweeping prohibition of high assault guns and weapons to stop the mass killings in the U.S.Following a recent shooting in a Colorado supermarket that killed 10 people, President Biden has called for a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. The U.S. has faced two mass killings in a week. Biden said it was high time that Congress pass the gun reform legislation, which the House has approved. The bill requires background checks on all firearms sales and transfers and extends the initial background check review period to 10 days. The president has been a vocal supporter of a weapons ban. During his term as the head of the task force in the wake of the Sandy Hook killings, he had authored the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. This expired in 2004 in accordance with its 10-year sunset provision. Biden had called for a ban on high-caliber weapons, universal background checks, and the creation of a national firearm registry during his 2020 election campaign. The Republicans have voiced their opposition to the bill, stating that it will not end violence and violates the Second Amendment.
