A case has been registered against Baba Ramdev and four others in Jaipur for allegedly conspiring to sell a fake Ayurveda medicine.Patanjali Ayurveda recently launched a drug, Coronil, with the claim that it could cure COVID-19. The company said the medicine's clinical trials were conducted on positive patients in association with NIMS, a private institute situated near Jaipur. The police in Jaipur registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Baba Ramdev, Patanjali Chief Executive Officer Acharya Balakrishna, Patanjali scientist Anurag Varshney, National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Chairman Balbir Singh Tomar, and NIMS Director Anurag Tomar for allegedly conspiring to sell a fake Ayurveda medicine with the misleading claim to cure COVID-19 following clinical trials on some patients. The FIR said Baba Ramdev claimed without getting the Union AYUSH Ministry's approval. FIR has been registered under section 420 Indian Penal Code (cheating), and Sections 4 and 7 of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, and the police are conducting an investigation. No arrests have been made till now. The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation.
