Prominent Republican party members have called for Trump to be removed from office before inauguration day

Prominent Republican party members have called for Trump to be removed from office before inauguration day Several prominent Republican members and Cabinet officials have said that they support the removal of Donald Trump from office before Jan. 20 after his supporters stormed Capitol and Wednesday, leading to violent clashes and at least four deaths. Four senior republicans are calling on the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, believing Trump to be a danger to the republic. Two others have said that Trump should be impeached and removed from office. Doing so, even at this late stage of Trump's presidency, would prevent him from running for office again. Trump's removal from office before Jan. 20 would require the support of many congressional republicans. Invoking the 25th Amendment would require support from the majority of Trump's cabinet. The 25th Amendment allows the vice-president, in this case Mike Pence, "to become acting president when a president is unable to continue his duties, if for example, he or she becomes incapacitated due to a physical or mental illness. The part of the amendment being discussed is section four, which allows the vice-president and a majority of the cabinet to declare President Trump unable to perform his duties," notes the BBC. Some have said that impeachment is unlikely, as there would not be enough time before Inauguration Day on Jan. 20. “I do not believe that an impeachment can happen in 13 days," said Rep. Steve Stivers (R.Ohio). He added that he would "not oppose" the 25th Amendment if cabinet decided on it, according to The Washington Post. While the party's response to Wednesday's events remain unclear, various reports show that it is true that several senior party members support impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment.
