Trump failed to explicitly denounce the white supremacists but urged the Proud Boys group to stand back. The first of three presidential debate took place on 29 September which many saw it as a chaotic squabble between the two candidates. Asked by Chris Wallace, the moderator, whether he was willing to condemn white supremacists and militia groups, Trump said he is ready to do that. He then sidestepped the question and said: "Almost everything I see is from the left-wing, not from the right-wing." When prodded by Chris for a direct and specific denouncement of the groups, including Proud Boys, he said that it was only the problem of left-wing and asked the Proud Boys group to 'stand by and stand back.' Earlier, too, Trump has been reluctant to condemn the racist notion and had said that there were fine people on both sides.
