Under the ACA, parents can keep their children on the health insurance policy until they turn 26 years. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services states that under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if parents’ health insurance plan covers children, they can add or keep their children on the health insurance policy until they turn 26 years old. Children can join or remain on a parent’s plan even if they are, married, not living with them, attending school, financially independent, or are eligible to enroll in their employer’s plan. Furthermore, the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) provides workers- who work for employers with 20 or more employees- and their families the right to continue to purchase group health insurance for limited periods when they would otherwise lose coverage due to certain events. Qualifying events include voluntary or involuntary job loss, reduced hours, and the transition between jobs, death, divorce, and other life events.
