West Bengal stood second.The Handbook on Fisheries Statistics - 2018 released by the Department of Fisheries of Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying in September 2018 stated that the total fish production of 12.59 million metric tonnes was registered during 2017-18 with a contribution of 8.90 million metric tonnes from the inland sector and 3.69 million metric tonnes from the marine sector. The average growth in fish production during 2017-18 stands at 10.14% compared to 2016-17 (11.43 million metric tonnes). Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest output of inland fish (34.50 lakh tonnes), and Gujarat was dubbed as the leading state for the production of marine fish (7.01 Lakh tonnes) in the country. According to the Economic Survey 2020, the total fish production of Andhra Pradesh was the highest at 34,49,560 tonnes (28,44,610 tonnes of inland fish and 6,04,950 tonnes of marine fish) in 2017-18, and West Bengal stood second with 17,42,090 tonnes of fish production (15,56,610 tonnes of inland fish and 1,85,480 tonnes of marine fish) In 2019, India’s marine fish production registered a marginal increase of 2.1% compared with the previous year. Tamil Nadu took the first position in landings with 7.75 lakh tonnes, followed by Gujarat (7.49 lakh tonnes) and Kerala (5.44 lakh tonnes). The total estimated landings of Andhra Pradesh was 2.59 lakh tonnes while that of West Bengal was 2.49 lakh tonnes. The Department of Fisheries has not released the total fish production figures for 2019. There is no official data on inland fish production in India in 2019. Hence, it cannot be ascertained whether the total fish production of Andhra Pradesh was greater than that of West Bengal in 2019.
