House Bill 175 formulates background checks for ammunition purchases & requires the creation of accurate transaction records. It is not a law yet. A proposed new law in Maryland requires the ammunition vendors to conduct a federal background check on the purchaser of ammunition. It also mandates the maintenance of a gun registry. On Feb. 05, 2021, a hearing of House Bill 175 was held at the House Judiciary Committee. The bill would need an ammunition vendor to verify the purchaser's identity and run a background check. It also directs the vendor to generate an electronic record of any sale, mentioning the purchase date, the brand, price of ammunition, and other detailed information of the purchaser. The bill prevents or prohibits an ammunition vendor from carrying out a transaction if the background investigation results show that a purchaser is prohibited from owning a firearm. The bill is proposed to be enacted on Oct. 1, 2021. If passed, a minimum $1,000 fine would be levied in case of violation. The penalty would vary or increase depending on the seriousness of the offenses. The Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) urged its readers to oppose the bill through their website's take-action notice. The legislation confers the Secretary of the Maryland State Police a choice to determine how long the electronic records would be kept and if additional information would be required.
