Fact-Check

The Verdict Misleading

The video shows an Israeli attack on a building in Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp in August 2024.

What is the claim?

A video depicting the destruction of a building, seemingly from an aerial strike is circulating on social media accompanied by a claim that it shows Israeli fighter jets attacking an apartment in Beirut allegedly using "bunker buster bombs" amid fresh tensions between the Lebanese-based Hezbollah group and Israel.

One X (formerly Twitter) user shared the video and wrote, "🔴 The moment an Israeli fighter jet destroyed an apartment in Beirut with a bunker-busting bomb."

At the time of this story, the post had amassed over 215,000 views and more than 1,700 likes. Archived versions of this and other similar posts can be found here, here, here, here, here, and here.

However, we found that the video shows an attack on a tower in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in August 2024 and was not filmed in Lebanon.

What are the facts?

Using a reverse image search on keyframes of the viral video, we found a similar video uploaded by Al-Jazeera Arabic on August 19, 2024 (archived here). The video is titled, "The moment of an Israeli missile strike on a tower in the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip" (Translated from Arabic using Google Translate). The description of the Al-Jazeera video states that the Palestinians had broadcast footage depicting the Israeli military targeting the Zaqout Tower in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza with a missile.

Text written on the Al-Jazeera video reads, "khames.alrefi," which led us to the original video posted by Palestinian journalist Khames Alrefi (archived here) on their Instagram account on August 18, 2024. A Google translation from Arabic of the title states, "The moment Burj Zaqout was targeted in Block C in Nuseirat camp." The viral video was more zoomed in on the building, unlike the video taken by Alrefi, which also shows a signboard with the name of a supermarket written on it.

A news report from Anadolu Agency, published on August 18, 2024, headlined, "Israeli attacks kill at least 16 people in battered Gaza" indicates that at least six people were killed and several others were injured in an Israeli bombardment targetting a house within the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The news report includes an embedded video (archived here) with footage of the incident similar to the viral video, which further corroborates that the attack took place in Gaza and not in Beirut.

The verdict

The video originally shows an Israeli attack on a building in Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza, in August 2024, not in Beirut, Lebanon.
