Democrats want to impose stricter regulations around gun control but do not advocate repealing the Second Amendment. During the Republican National Convention, President Donald Trump said that Democrats want to take away the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment gives the right to the citizens of the United States to keep and bear arms. This claim is misleading. While some Democrats have advocated repealing the Second Amendment, this stance is not being pursued by Democrats in Congress or by Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Biden has expressed support for the Second Amendment, saying that he himself is a gun owner. He does propose some firearm restrictions, such as a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Biden's plan includes mandating that people who own assault weapons either sell them to the federal government or properly register them with the authorities. He also supports background checks and other regulations. In an interview with CNN, Biden said that he would implement a federal gun buyback program for assault weapons, but not all guns. Biden also said guns that had been legally purchased would not be confiscated. Moreover, to reduce the stockpiling of firearms, Biden supports legislation restricting the number of firearms an individual may purchase per month to one.
