Misleading: The Indian national flag was designed by Muslim woman Surayya Badruddin Tyabji.

Fact-Check

The Verdict Misleading

Although Tyabji suggested swapping the spinning wheel with the Ashoka Chakra on the national flag, Pingali Venkkaya designed the flag.

Context:

India celebrated its 75th Independence Day on August 15, 2022. During this occasion, several events were organized all over India. One such event was the government's "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign that encouraged people to hoist the national flag in every home to celebrate India's 75th year of independence. Amid the initiative , many misleading and false narratives about the Indian National flag circulated on social media. One such post claimed that a Muslim woman designed Indian National Flag. We found that this narrative has been resurfacing since 2013. However, this is inaccurate.

In fact:

According to the High Commission of India, Colombo's 2019 newsletter, Indian freedom fighter Pingali Venkkayya presented twenty-four flag designs in a booklet called "A National Flag for India" in 1916. In 1921, he presented a dual colored flag design to Mahatma Gandhi with a red colour representing Hindus and a green colour representing Muslims. Indian educationist Lala Hans Raj Sondhi city suggested adding a traditional spinning wheel for the flag. Gandhi modified the flag to represent other religious communities in India by adding a white band with a spinning wheel. This tricolour flag, or the 'Swaraj flag', was first presented at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting at Bejwada.

Additionally, after British parliament announced the transfer of powers to India on February 20, 1947, the Congress party thought of redesigning the flag that was acceptable by all other parties and princely states in India. A committee headed by the country's first to-be president Rajendra Prasad was formed to recommend a new national flag on June 23, 1947. After several discussions, they came up with a unanimous decision to keep the Purna Swaraj flag (saffron on the top, white in the middle with 'charkha' or spinning wheel, and green at the bottom) by only replacing the 'charkha' with 'Dharma Chakra' the 'Wheel of Law'. Reputed artist Surayya Badruddin Tyabji gave the sample of this flag. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru recommended this sample flag on July 22, 1947, before the Constituent Assembly. Surayya suggested the changes during the final look of the national flag, but Venkayya was the first person to design and present the Indian national flag.

We can observe Surayya Tyabji's name (serial no.69) in the list of members of the Flag Presentation Committee on the Loksabha website.

All India Radio reports that Delhi celebrated the birth centenary of National flag designer Venkkaya on August 2, 2022.

The verdict:

Based on the above evidence, Venkkayya designed the national flag; following this, many changes were adopted to the national flag. Tyabji suggested a change in the final look of the Indian national flag by replacing the spinning wheel with the Ashoka Chakra. Hence, we are marking this claim as misleading.
