The footage is from 2014 and is unrelated to the recent escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Context
A video of two Palestinian men being hit by a missile is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “Palestinian journalist films the moment an Israeli missile strike kills him and a fellow medic on live TV! Is this Israel defending itself!?”
The video was posted on October 25, 2023, amid the current escalation of conflict between Hamas and Israel. The same video is currently circulating on TikTok and X/Twitter as well.
However, the video is not recent and does not relate to recent events in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In fact
The two men in the video are journalist Khaled Hamad and paramedic Fouad Jaber. The footage is a recording from Hamad’s camera and shows the two men taking cover against a wall followed by an explosion, after which only Hamad’s hand lying motionless on the ground can be seen in the frame. Superimposed on the image is the text, “Both Fouad Jaber and Khaled Hamad were killed by this missile. Khaled’s camera continued to record after he died.”
The clip was originally part of a 47-minute Al Jazeera program called “Gaza: The Last Picture” that was uploaded to YouTube on July 20, 2016. The clip that is circulating on social media is featured approximately 33 minutes into the program. According to the description of the program, it follows Hamad as he records the consequences of the Israeli Operation Protective Edge in the city of Shujayea in Gaza in July 2014. Al Jazeera also covered the deaths of Hamad and Faber in a news report from August 2014.
The Guardian reported on Hamad’s death in a news report from July 21, 2014. “A Palestinian news cameraman, Khaled Hamad, was killed early today in Gaza, reportedly during Israeli artillery shelling of the city's Shujaya (aka Shuja'iyya) residential district,” the report reads.
The verdict
The video that has been recently shared on social media is not related to the recent escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The footage is from 2014. The recent social media posts containing the footage do not clarify that the footage is old. Therefore, we have marked this claim as misleading.
