Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The viral video was filmed in India’s capital, Delhi, not London. YouTuber Drew Binsky recorded it at the Chandni Chowk market in Old Delhi.

What is the claim?

A video circulating on social media purportedly shows London crowded with non-white immigrants. The footage depicts a man navigating through a bustling market. The post emerged on social media following the Labour Party's victory in the 2024 U.K. elections.

The video's accompanying text reads, “Going for a walk around London (labour won).” The post's caption cryptically asserts, “London, one of the most valuable cities in the world with its 2000-year history, is now Londonistan.”

The term " Londonistan" is associated with far-right rhetoric alleging Muslim dominance in London. An archived version of the post is available here.

However, this claim is false. The video actually features travel vlogger Drew Binsky walking through a market in India's capital, Delhi. It was deceptively shared to promote the "Great Replacement theory" narrative, as detailed by Logically Facts here. Similar videos circulated prior to the U.K. elections, falsely implying that non-white immigrants, particularly Muslims, are overtaking London.

How did we find the truth?

Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the individual in the viral video is Drew Binsky (archived here), a well-known YouTuber and travel vlogger. By reviewing Binsky's social media accounts, including Instagram and TikTok, we located the original video. It was posted on March 8, 2024, with a caption stating, “This is what it's like to walk around Delhi at 5:30 PM."

Binsky also shared the video on his TikTok (archive here) on November 6, 2023, specifying its location in India.

Where in Delhi was this video shot?

The 23-second viral video prominently features elements such as a blue "CCTV" board, a white building, and a shop identified as 'Lehenga Bazar'. Using these clues and Google Maps, we pinpointed the location to Chandni Chowk Road, Delhi. This included identifying the specific shop and narrow lane visible in Binsky's footage.

We were also able to identify the narrow lane from which Binsky walks in the video, exiting directly in front of a blue board with the word CCTV on it and across the road from the shop ‘Lehenga Bazar’ and the electrical apparatus.

2024 U.K. elections

In the recent U.K. elections, the Labour Party secured a significant victory over Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party, winning 412 seats out of 600. The Conservatives managed to secure only 121 seats.

The verdict

The video depicting a crowded market in India has been falsely portrayed as London after Labour's electoral success. Originally filmed by Drew Binsky in Delhi's Chandni Chowk area, the misleading post inaccurately suggests demographic shifts in London.
