Fact-Check

The Verdict False

An old video of a fishing boat on fire in Taiwan has been shared as a fire at the port of Haifa, Israel, after missiles were launched from Lebanon.

What's the claim?

Multiple posts on X (formerly Twitter) feature a 15-second-long video with claims that it shows a fire at Haifa port in Israel after a missile was launched from Lebanon.

The video shows a boat engulfed in flames at night next to a wooden dock. Archive links to the posts are here, here, here, here, and here.

However, this video is old and unrelated to the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. It is a video of a fishing boat on fire in Taiwan in December 2023.

What we found

A reverse image search of keyframes in the video led us to a YouTube video (archived here) with the same visuals, uploaded on December 11, 2023, with a title in Mandarin.

A Google Translate translation of the title reads, "Shocking reports of fishing boat on fire in Budai Town. The fishing boat was caught in the sea of fire, but no one was injured".

Budai township is a coastal town in Chiayi county, Taiwan. We found several Taiwanese news reports of the incident published on December 11 and 12, 2023. Links to some of these news reports can be found here, here, and here. All of these news reports carry photos and the same 15-second-long clip shared in the viral posts.

The reports detail that on the morning of December 11, 2023, the Chiayi county fire department received reports of a fishing boat on fire in Budai township. There were no injuries or casualties.

Therefore, the viral posts' claim is false, as the videos do not show the Haifa port on fire after missiles were launched from Lebanon recently.

The verdict

This video does not show visuals of the effect of Hezbollah missile strikes in Haifa, Israel. It is an old video from December 2023 of a fishing boat on fire in Chiayi county, Taiwan.
