What's the claim?

A video of a group of undressed people standing in a line near a building with a curved roof is being shared on social media, claiming that the video shows "leaked footage" of an Israeli detention camp located in Gaza where Palestinians were tortured and humiliated by Israeli soldiers.

An X (formerly Twitter) user shared a video (archived here) with the caption, "Leaked footage from an Israeli detention camp shows the torture and humiliation of Palestinian captives." The text on the viral video reads, "FOOTAGE FROM INSIDE THE BIR GHANAM CAMP. Men, women and children are stripped n4ked, tort*red for ransoms sometimes to death." The post had over 60,000 views and over 3,300 reposts. Archives of similar posts can be found here and here.

However, the video is from Libya and is unrelated to the Israel-Hamas war.

Here are the facts

Through a reverse image search, we found that Libyan news site G Plusss shared a screenshot from the video in a June 23, 2024 report. The report was titled: "Stripped of their clothes and blindfolded... A video reveals violations against Egyptian and Syrian immigrants at the Bir Al-Ghanam shelter center" (translated from Arabic. The report stated that the video was first posted by the head of the National Institution for Human Rights in Libya, Ahmed Abdel Hakim Hamza, who claimed that the visuals are from the Bir Al-Ghanam detention camp, where illegal immigrants from Syria and Egypt are detained. LJ-BC TV, a Libyan Jamahiriya Channel, and local news outlet "ANHA" Hawar news agency also reported the same, citing this video shared by Hakim.

We found that Ahmed Abdel Hakim Hamza had first posted this video on Facebook (archived here) on June 21, 2024, with a caption that the footage shows illegal immigrants from Egypt and Syria detained at Bir Al-Ghanam shelter center. We have contacted him to confirm when the viral video was captured. This check will be updated once we receive a response.Logically Facts geolocated the Bir-Al Ghanam camp to Libya. We can also see the curved roofs seen in the viral video on Google Maps.
