Video from 2019 falsely shared to claim Sonam Kapoor performed at King Charles's coronation

Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The coronation of King Charles has not taken place yet. Further, Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor is expected to perform a spoken word piece, not a dance.

Context
Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja has been invited to perform a spoken word piece at the grand Coronation Concert of King Charles III alongside global icons Lionel Richie and Katy Perry. Kapoor Ahuja will be using her performance to introduce the Commonwealth virtual choir. The 74-year-old monarch and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, will be formally crowned at London's Westminster Abbey on May 6, and millions are expected to celebrate over a long holiday weekend. However, following the announcement of the actor’s performance, several misleading posts and videos are being shared on social media, including one claiming to show Kapoor performing at the ceremony. The footage shows the Bollywood actor walking the ramp and performing steps of the classical dance form Kathak. The post's caption reads, "Sonam Kapoor "performing" at the Coronation Ceremony of King Charles 😂😂 This is how we take revenge on Brits 😂 #KingCharlesIII #KingCharlesIIICoronation #Coronation." The post has received over 76,000 views and 1000 likes.

In Fact
We came across a news article by The Asian Age dated March 25, 2019, featuring Kapoor Ahuja wearing the same attire. According to the report, fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla organized a Mumbai-based fashion show celebrating Indian textiles and embroidery. The show featured prominent personalities such as Karan Johar, Shweta Nanda Bachchan, and Kapoor Ahuja. The fashion show was a contributory effort to help cancer patients—specifically, children with leukemia.

The Indian Express also reported on the event, along with a picture of Sonam Kapoor wearing the same outfit as in the viral video. Designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla also shared the images on their Instagram account and wrote, "'Inheritance, An Ode to the Textiles and Embroideries of India' by #abujanisandeepkhosla in aid of Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) @cpaaindia . Sonam Kapoor Ahuja @sonamkapoor , Karan Johar @karanjohar and Shweta Bachchan Nanda @shwetabachchan were our fabulous showstoppers. Jewellery by @sabooatajsk."

After additional research, we discovered that the viral video was posted on a YouTube channel called Bollywood Spy on March 25, 2019. As stated in the video description, it captures Sonam Kapoor's performance at the Caring With Style Fashion Show. The same video was also posted on another YouTube channel named ‘Moviez Adda - Hindi’, which provided similar information. Further, the audio of a choir singing 'God Save the King' heard in the viral video has clearly been superimposed.

Kapoor Ahuja had also shared a few images from the event on her Facebook page in March 2019. She wrote "Inheritance, An Ode to the textiles and embroideries of India" in aid of Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) for the designer duo Abu Jani & Sandeep Khala. Sonam Kapoor walking the ramp along with performing some Kathak as a showstopper of the show last night."

The Verdict
The video of Sonam Kapoor Ahuja performing at a charity event in Mumbai in 2019 has been falsely shared as footage of the actor performing at King Charles's coronation. The coronation ceremony of King Charles is scheduled to take place on May 6, and Kapoor Ahuja has been invited to perform a spoken word piece at the event. Therefore, we mark this claim false.
