According to CMIE, or the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, the unemployment rate in West Bengal in October 2016 was at 4.6 percent. The unemployment rate in October 2020 stood at 10 percent. The highest unemployment rate in West Bengal between October 2016 to October 2020 was in May and April, 2020 at 17.4 percent, mostly owing to the economic conditions brought by the pandemic. The unemployment rate increased 10.5 percentage points, rising to 17.4 percent. In the same months, unemployment in West Bengal was less than than the national rate of 23.5 percent. The unemployment rate in West Bengal did reach it's pre-coronavirus rate in July 2020, at 6.8 percent A 217 percent increase from 4.6 percent equals to 14.58 percent.
