There’s no evidence that regulations on agriculture and buying up of farmland is a globalist plot to control people by controlling food supply.
Context
A video circulating on TikTok suggests that regulations on agriculture and the buying up of farmland by Microsoft founder Bill Gates are part of a globalist plot conducted by the United Nations and the World Economic Forum (WEF) to control the world’s food supply and, thus, the world’s population.
“As any communist tyrant of the last 100 years has understood, if you control the food, you control the people. That is ultimately the end goal,” says one person in the video, suggesting there is a “war on farmers” going on guided by the U.N.’s Agenda 2030 and the sustainability goals.
One example of the video, captioned “Farming under attack. Wake up people!” was uploaded to TikTok on October 1, 2023, and has amassed more than 202,000 views on the platform. It has also been shared on X (formerly Twitter).
However, the WEF calls the claims made by the video fake news, and Gates has previously denied that there’s some grand scheme behind his buying farmland. The video was produced by a website known for spreading misinformation.
In fact
The video is originally part of a documentary called “No Farmers, No Food” that premiered on September 23, 2023. The documentary is produced by the Epoch Times, a website known for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories, and can be rented on its website for $9.99.
The video on social media opens with the claim that Bill Gates’ foundation wants farmland to be owned by governments or private consortia, getting rid of animal-based proteins, stockyards, turkey farms, and chickens.
But the claims are false, a spokesperson for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation told Logically Facts. “The foundation’s work on agricultural development is focused on supporting farmers and governments in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia that are seeking a sustainable, inclusive agricultural transformation—one that creates economic opportunity, respects limits on natural resources, and gives everyone equal access to affordable, nutritious food.”
Bill Gates addressed his farmland ownership in an “ask me anything” session on Reddit at the beginning of 2023, explaining that all the decisions to buy up farmland were made by a professional investment team and that there “isn't some grand scheme involved.” He also pointed out that he owns less than one 4,000th of U.S. farmland and has invested in farms to make them more productive and to create more jobs.
The overarching suggestion of the video that regulation on agriculture is really a globalist plot run by the WEF is false, a spokesperson for WEF told Logically Facts. “I can confirm that these claims are fake news created to discredit the important work that the World Economic Forum does on serious global challenges,” he said.
Both Gates, the WEF, and the U.N. have previously been targets of numerous unfounded conspiracy theories, among them that they are seeking to depopulate the earth or that they are part of a secretive globalist elite that is seeking world government. Logically Facts has debunked several of these claims. Moreover, Logically Facts has previously debunked multiple claims made by The Epoch Times.
The verdict
There’s no evidence that regulations on agriculture and Bill Gates’ buying up of farmland are parts of a globalist plot conducted by the U.N. and the WEF to control the world’s food supply. The claim originates from a documentary produced by The Epoch Times, a known spreader of misinformation and conspiracy theories. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
