Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The claims of Janet Yellen’s arrest originated on a website known for publishing satire and humor. The Treasury Secretary has not been arrested.

What is the claim?

A screenshot circulating on social media claims that U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has been arrested for treason. The caption of one post sharing the screenshot on Facebook read, “Janet Yellen Arrested for Treason…. Investigators from the U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) on Tuesday arrested Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen at a Maryland hotel, alleging that the Deep State despot had engineered a diabolical scheme that clandestinely sent hundreds of billions of American tax dollars to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, far more than the $75bn the criminal Biden Regime has admitted to giving its felonious collaborator in Ukraine…” Archives of similar posts claiming Yellen was arrested can be seen here and here

No credible news reports about the U.S. Treasury Secretary being arrested exist. Neither the Treasury Department nor the CID has released any official statement about Yellen’s arrest.

The U.S. Treasury Department has issued numerous press releases containing the remarks of Secretary Yellen on various occasions since September 14, 2023, after the Real Raw News article was published. This shows that the article's content has no basis, and Secretary Yellen was not arrested.

We also found social media posts on Secretary Janet Yellen’s X (formerly Twitter) account, where she shared pictures of her attending various events after her purported arrest by the U.S. Army CID for treason.

This is not the first time such claims of prominent people being arrested surfaced on social media platforms. Logically Facts has previously debunked similar claims that originated on Real Raw News, and you can find them here and here

The story of U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s arrest was first published by “Real Raw News,” a website known for sharing humor and satire. Secretary Yellen has not been arrested and has been performing her duties as usual. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
