Fact-Check

The Verdict False

Madonna was taken to hospital due to a serious bacterial infection; there is no evidence that it is related to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Context

Posts on Twitter have claimed that Madonna was hospitalized due to the COVID-19 vaccine. These posts claim that the vaccine made her ill, and her condition proves that the COVID-19 vaccines harm human health.

In Fact

There is no evidence that Madonna’s condition was caused by COVID-19 vaccination.

According to a statement made on Instagram by her talent manager Guy Oseary, “Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection” on Saturday, June 24. She was taken to the hospital and spent several days in an Intensive Care Unit.”

He stated, “Her Health is improving; however, she is still under medical care.” While a full recovery is expected, all commitments must be postponed until her health recovers. According to the BBC, her upcoming world tour, which was set to start on July 15 in Vancouver, Canada, has been postponed.

Credible news outlets have widely reported on Madonna’s condition, but none have indicated that the vaccine is responsible for the bacterial infection. Additionally, there is no evidence to suggest Madonna recently received a COVID-19 vaccine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the COVID-19 vaccines do not contain harmful ingredients and use harmless pieces of “spike proteins” of a virus unrelated to COVID-19. This creates an immune response to help protect against getting sick from COVID-19. The vaccines also do not contain the live virus that causes COVID-19 and, therefore, cannot cause COVID-19 infection. The vaccines contain parts of a virus and not harmful bacteria.

However, COVID-19 vaccines can cause some side effects. The U.K.’s National Health Service states that common side effects include a sore arm, tiredness, headaches, aches, mild flu-like symptoms, and “feeling or being sick.”

Very rare side effects include allergic reactions and myocarditis. While most people with allergies can take the COVID-19 vaccine, it is advised to inform healthcare staff if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction before vaccination. Similarly, myocarditis is a rare side effect and is an inflammation of the heart. However, most people have recovered following rest and simple treatments. There is no evidence that serious bacterial infections are a side effect of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Logically Facts has previously debunked various COVID-19 vaccine disinformation narratives, including claims that they can cause cancer or destroy sperm. The COVID-19 vaccines are considered safe and effective.

The Verdict

Madonna was hospitalized due to a bacterial infection. However, no evidence exists that the infection was caused by COVID-19 vaccination. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
