No official reasons have been given for his resignation. NDTV reported that GC Murmu is the front-runner for the post of the country's new auditor. Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu resigned from his post on August 6, 2020, a day after Jammu & Kashmir had completed one year being a Union Territory of India. The new LG of J&K would be BJP leader and former Union Minister Manoj Singh. However, news media reports have cited various reasons which could have led to his resignation. Murmu's sudden exit from his post is allegedly due to the Election Commission not allowing him to comment on the assembly election in Jammu & Kashmir. Another reason cited is his statement on 4G network restoration. Murmu had reportedly said he did not see any problem in the restoration of the 4G network Jammu and Kashmir. Although, the NDTV reported that GC Murmur is the front-runner for the post of the country's new auditor.
