A resident of Rosaria named Olga was misidentified as Messi's grandmother in the viral video. His grandmother is not alive.

Context

Argentina defeated France in a penalty shootout to win the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar on December 18. Fans around the world celebrated ace player Lionel Messi's victory. A video was shared on social media claiming fans went to Messi's grandmother's house in Rosario, Argentina, to celebrate the team's victory against Croatia in the semi-finals on December 14. Rosario is Messi's birthplace. The viral video shows fans chanting Messi's name outside a house. It was claimed that the woman seen in a window of the house was Messi's grandmother. However, we found that the claim is false. 

In Fact

On conducting reverse image search, we found that the woman in the viral video is not Messi's grandmother. According to an article published by an Argentina-based news channel Rosario 3, the name of the woman in the viral video is Olga. She lives in the Alvear and Brown area in Rosario. In an interview with Telenoche Rosario (El Tres), she said that fans gathered outside her house after Argentina's victory against Croatia and started calling her Messi's grandmother. She said, "I am proud of Argentina's victory. Everything was so nice. I did not expect it (Translated from Spanish)." 

Argentina-based news website Infobae reported that both of Messi's paternal and maternal grandmothers have died.

A lady named Olga from Rosario was misidentified as Messi's grandmother in the viral video of fans celebrating Argentina's victory. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
