Hunter Biden was interested in striking a deal with a Chinese company in 2017, which ultimately fell apart. Joe Biden was never involved. President-elect Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, was in spotlight for most of 2020, mainly for his alleged links to international business dealings with Ukraine and China. In October 2020, the New York Post released contents of a laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter. The Post said that it obtained a copy of the hard drive of the laptop from President Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who says he received it from the owner of a Delaware computer-repair shop, where Hunter allegedly dropped off the laptop in 2019 and never came back to collect it. Subsequently, Tony Bobulinski—Hunter Biden's former business associate—came forward with records including emails, contracts and a business plan document. Bobulinski told Fox News that Hunter Biden introduced him to Joe Biden, saying, "This is Tony, Dad, the individual I told you about that’s helping us with the business that we’re working on with the Chinese." Bobulinski did not provide evidence of this meeting. The Wall Street Journal reviewed Bobulinski's records and confirmed that—while it is true that Hunter and James Biden were interested in striking up a deal with a Chinese energy and finance company in 2017—Joe Biden was never involved. The New York Times has also stated that there is no evidence Joe Biden was involved in a joint venture with his son and brother, and points out that the deal in question "ultimately fell apart". Biden’s tax returns, which he has released, show no income from any such venture. But it is also important to note that there is nothing illegal about doing business in China or with Chinese partners. Andrew Bates, a Biden campaign spokesman, told the New York Times: "the former vice president never had any stake in the project. Joe Biden has never even considered being involved in business with his family, nor in any overseas business whatsoever.”
