Democrats voted against the bill as they deemed it was inappropriate.Abortion has been an issue in presidential campaigns. The bill, which Republicans say would guarantee protections for an infant born alive after an attempted abortion, was put to the vote in Senate in Feb 2020. The bill was not passed as it fell short of required votes. President Donald Trump accused that Senate Democrats wanted the killing of newborn infant children. Democrats argue that there is already a bipartisan law that protects the infants, and the measure would prevent doctors from making the best medical decisions in sensitive situations. Further, the number of relevant cases is vanishingly small, and usually involve heartbreaking situations that often have specific, unusual factors at play that are hard to accommodate in advance. They said the bill was not a genuine piece of legislation that could solve a significant problem.
