False: Black Lives Matter is a terrorist organization.

In a worldwide database of over 200,000 terrorist organizations, Black Lives Matter is not listed. A post started circulating on social media, referring to BLM as "Burn Loot Murder," including a picture proclaiming, Black Lives Matter is a terrorist organization. A Massachusetts city councilor made a similar claim in July. Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump's lawyer, said that Black Lives Matter would be "Proven to be a terrorist group." In 2016, a petition requesting that President Barack Obama classify Black Lives Matter as a terrorist group and got 140,000 signatures in two weeks. Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a global organization founded in 2013. The organization's mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. On the U.S. State Department's list of foreign terrorist groups, BLM is registered as a domestic group, and it has not been recognized as a terrorist organization. While the definition of terrorism has been disputed for years, federal law defines domestic terrorism as activities that endanger human life and violate federal or state criminal laws. There is no credible evidence to show that BLM is a terrorist group. According to a study by Acled Data, 93 percent of the BLM protests were nonviolent, and some of the violent events were just opportunistic vandalism. BLM does not meet the legal definition of a terrorist organization, and it does not appear in a massive database of terrorist attacks.
