Fact-Check

The Verdict Fake

This quote attributed to Kamala Harris is fake. There is no record of her making this statement.

What’s the claim

A fabricated quote attributed to U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has been widely circulated on social media. The post features an image of Harris on the left and a quote on the right that reads: "Today we celebrate the Olympics. Because Olympians are Olympic, & they are at the Olympics being Olympian, so it’s more important now than ever to support their Olympianism." Archived versions of these posts can be found on Threads, Facebook, and X (formerly known as Twitter).

However, this quote is false. There is no record of Harris making such a statement about the Olympics currently underway in Paris, France.

What we found

Logically Facts discovered that Harris commented on the 2024 Olympics twice. The first instance was on July 22, before the opening ceremony. During an event at the South Lawn celebrating the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championship teams from the 2023-2024 season, Harris referred to the athletes who would represent the country at the Games as “ambassadors for our nation.”

On July 26, 2024, she expressed her support for the U.S. Olympic team by sharing a video on X (archived here). In the video, she says, “Team USA, we are so proud of all of you, so go to Paris and slay! We’ll see you soon. You are the best of the best, and we are so proud of you. Have fun too. Okay!”

Our research and the lack of mainstream media coverage confirm that the vice president did not make this statement.

On July 21, 2024, President Joe Biden announced that he was ending his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris as the Democratic candidate. Since her nomination, false claims about her have increased. Logically Facts has recently debunked many of these claims, which can be found here, here, and here.

We have contacted Harris’s director of rapid response, Ammar Moussa, for a comment. We will update this story when we receive a response.

The verdict

The quote attributed to Kamala Harris about the 2024 Paris Olympics is fabricated. There is no record of Harris making this remark.
