Fact-Check

The Verdict Fake

Several discrepancies seen in the image show that the now-viral photograph of Dwayne Johnson is not real, but artificially created.

What's the claim?

An image of U.S. actor Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock, draping the Israeli flag on his body and holding a placard that says "Share!" in Hebrew is being shared online, claiming that he voiced support for Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war.

A Facebook user shared this image (archived here) with the caption: "Thank you Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock. What do we know about him so far? The Rock has been open about his Christian faith through his actions which may match the Christian values and he has clearly condemned Hamas Palestine for the terror attack on the Jewish people. God bless him." This image has also been shared on TikTok (archived here).

However, the image is not real. It has been created using artificial intelligence.

What we found

A close look at the image showed several discrepancies that indicated it could be generated via artificial intelligence. Johnson's left eye is misaligned with his right. His hand holding the placard is unusually large and distorted, and he appears to be holding the placard awkwardly.

We also noticed a very different tattoo on his right arm in the viral image, which does not match his original tattoo, as seen on his official Instagram account (archived here). In reality, Dwayne Johnson has a tattoo resembling an animal skull — he had shared an image of him getting the tattoo in 2021 (archived here), saying that it was a "bull tattoo." This tattoo can also be seen on his right arm in a recent video (archived here) he posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on July 1, 2024.

Hive Moderation, an online AI detection tool, found this image to be 70.8 percent likely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content.

On October 11, 2023, Dwayne Johnson released a statement on his official Instagram (archived here) account after the Hamas attack on October 7. In his post, he wrote, "I'm heartbroken, angry, and sickened by the brutal murders and kidnapping of Jewish people through the horrific acts of the Hamas terrorist group. The growing loss of innocent Israeli and Palestinian lives is heart wrenching as this war escalates to immense proportions."

However, the now-viral image is fake. You can read Logically Facts's guide on identifying AI-generated images and the telltale signs that an image was probably created using AI.

The verdict

The image of actor Dwayne Johnson with the Israeli national flag draped around him is AI-generated. Therefore, we have marked this claim as fake.
