Fact-Check

The Verdict False

The clip was posted on TikTok on September 10, before Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida in October.

The claim

A video of a thunderstorm, with lightning bolts shooting from the sky, does not show footage from Hurricane Milton, which made landfall in Florida on October 9 as a Category 3 storm.

A video shared on Threads (archived here) shows dark clouds moving past, with lightning shooting slowly, striking the flat terrain beneath. It was posted on October 12 with the caption, "Hurricane Milton." It gathered more than 6.3 million likes.

The 5-second clip was also shared online in Russian and on YouTube in Spanish, linking it to the hurricane.

In fact

While Hurricane Milton did cause considerable damage in parts of Florida, as documented by The New York Times, the video is unrelated to the storm.

Through a reverse image search, Logically Facts found the same clip was shared on TikTok by the user Mysterious Weather on September 10. It was subsequently spread by other social media users in September.

Logically Facts contacted the TikTok user to ask whether they digitally created or enhanced the video, and this article will be updated if we receive a response.

Logically Facts previously addressed dated imagery and clips shared with captions linking them to Hurricane Milton.

The Verdict

The video does not show lightning captured during Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on October 9. The clip was posted on TikTok on September 10, a month earlier.
